Shiksha Deep

In India there are millions of families who are yet to reach a level of economic independence required to take care of their family’s needs and provide education to their children. Even if the child is enrolled in school, sustainability of their college education or even vocational training is always a challenge. The lack of opportunities deprives a child of not just education but even a fair chance at leading a dignified life.

Empowering Lives Through Education

Scholarship program aims at educating deserving meritorious children from economically backward background. To begin with, scholarship program is currently focused on children of Hamalis. Away from the familiarity of home and comfort, the job of a Hamali is strenuous and to say the least back-breaking. A frugal existence with sparse means and rough living conditions. And even though being a Hamali is precarious, because of the lack of opportunities and support it ends up becoming a family occupation. Education has the power to transform not just the life of a Hamali but his/her entire ecosystem.

The Journey

In Karnataka normally a Hamali works from 3-9 months in a year, with an average income of Rs 6,000 - 7,000 per month. The lifecycle of this job isn't permanent and varies from season to season. In Karnataka, including men and women, there are 3 lakh Hamalis, leading a difficult socio-economic life coupled with serious health problems.

It is not easy to identify deserving family and a student. The verification process is time consuming and tedious. In order to overcome this situation, scholarship program identified CITU, an association that works in the interest of such class and persons. In the last ten years, the program has benefitted more than 15 districts of Karnataka, aiding students from Class 10 till their PHD courses. And the ripples of success stories have started influencing an entire ecosystem. We saw a three fold increase in the membership of CITU in the last ten years - from 10,000 to 30,000 and counting.

We adopted this project initiated by the Family Trust of F.R. Singhvi, which over the last 10 years has provided scholarship to more than 1,000 students. Looking at the potential that this initiative has, the Family Trust of F.R. Singhvi reached out to Round Table and Ladies Circle to expand this project many folds and reach out to more such underprivileged communities. The Scholarship program along with other individuals and corporations and support from the Family Trust of F.R. Singhvi will continue year after year enabling and empowering lives, thus creating an ecosystem of well-being for all.

What your money can do?

Fortunately, the cost of college education in most of the government aided schools and colleges is not very high. Your support would help in creating an opportunity for children from such downtrodden background to be able to join the mainstream economic prosperity. We envision a future, where every child has the freedom to choose and every family empowered. Your help can shape this vi-sion into a reality. A deserving chance for a better future.

This year we wish to educate 750 (verified) students out of the 1000 applications received.
